The Puget Sound metropolitan area is recognized as one of the premier biotechnology and medical technology centers in the world.  Companies in this industry are developing revolutionary methods for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, AIDS, cystic fibrosis, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and other serious conditions.  Medical device firms are leaders in the research and development of ultrasound imaging and heart defibrillation products.  Snohomish County companies are playing a major global role in this dynamic and ever-changing sector of the economy.

 

  • Since 1980, the state's research institutions have attracted $19.3 billion into the state, mostly in the form of federal research and training money focused on health science and environmental-related basic research.
  • The Puget Sound region has the nation’s 8th largest concentration of biotechnology companies and research facilities.
  • The Snohomish County market is home to nearly 25% of all Washington State biotech and biomedical companies and 26% of all employees.
  • The majority of the companies in Washington state (51%) are focused on research & development of therapeutic products; diagnostics (26%); genomics/informatics (7%); plant, agriculture & animal (6%); natural resources (1%); and other, including contract manufacturing & genetic testing (9%).

Sonus paid to develop tumor drugs

The HERALD Reports

Sonus Pharmaceuticals Inc. has signed a licensing agreement with Bayer HealthCare to develop compounds that have shown early promise in shrinking tumors. Bothell-based Sonus said it has received exclusive rights to develop two such compounds, as well as rights to lesser compounds held by Bayer. In exchange, Sonus is paying Bayer $450,000 and has agreed to give Bayer milestone payments and royalties if any approved drugs come out of the research.

Mukilteo firm joins Russell index

CombiMatrix Corp. of Mukilteo is set to join the Russell Microcap Index when Russell Investments reconstitutes its indexes on Friday. Annual reconfiguring of Russell indexes captures the 4,000 largest U.S. stocks as of the end of May, ranking them by market capitalization to create the Russell 3000 Index and Russell Microcap. Shares of CombiMatrix, which specializes in DNA tools and services, closed Wednesday at $9.72, up 43 cents.
